What Size Rug for a Dining Room? The Rule That Actually Works

The dining room is the room people most often buy one size too small for. Here is the rule, and why it exists.

The size

The rug must be big enough that a chair stays on it when pulled out. That is 60 cm of rug beyond the table edge on every side as an absolute minimum, and 75 cm is safer. For a six-seat table, 200 × 300 cm.

Why that rule exists

A chair leg dropping off the edge of a rug every time someone sits down is the most common regret in dining-room rugs, and it cannot be fixed afterwards.

The thing to watch

This is the room where washability matters most. A dining rug takes food, wine and grease, and traditionally that meant either a dark rug or no rug.

Why washable matters here

Survives the spills under the table. Every rug we make washes at 30°C in a domestic machine, grips a hard floor without an underlay, and contains no latex, glue or rubber crumb. In a dining room that is the difference between a rug you protect and a rug you use.
