Do Robot Vacuums Work on Rugs?

They handle low pile well and struggle with almost everything else. Pile height and edge treatment decide it.
Where they fail
- High or shag pile — the brush bar bogs down and the unit beaches.
- Thick bound edges — the robot either refuses to climb or catches on the way off.
- Tassels and fringes — they wrap the brush bar and stop the machine.
- Very dark rugs — some cliff sensors read black as a drop and refuse to cross.
- Loose lightweight rugs — the robot pushes them into a heap.
What works
- A low, dense, cut pile with no loops.
- A flat woven edge rather than a thick binding.
- No fringe.
- A backing that grips, so the rug stays put while the robot works.
On the dark rug problem
Cliff sensors use infrared reflectance, and a matte black surface reflects little. Most current models handle it; older ones stop dead at the edge. If you already own the robot, test with something black before buying a charcoal rug.
A practical note
Robots do maintenance, not deep cleaning. They keep surface dust down between proper vacuums — which on a rug is what stops grit reaching the base of the pile.
