What Size Rug for a Living Room? The Rule That Actually Works

The living room is the room people most often buy one size too small for. Here is the rule, and why it exists.

The size

The front legs of the sofa and of every chair in the seating group should sit on the rug. For a three-seat sofa and two chairs that means 155 × 230 cm as a minimum and 200 × 300 cm where the room allows.

Why that rule exists

The living-room rug is doing a structural job: it draws a boundary around the seating and tells the eye where the room begins. A rug too small to touch the furniture does the opposite — it fragments the arrangement.

The thing to watch

Measure the seating group and add about 40 cm each side. Mark it on the floor with tape before you order.

Why washable matters here
