What Size Rug for a Hallway? The Rule That Actually Works

The hallway is the room people most often buy one size too small for. Here is the rule, and why it exists.
The size
A runner leaving 10–15 cm of visible floor on each side. In most UK halls that is 80 × 300 cm.
Why that rule exists
A hall runner protects the busiest floor in the house and quietens it. Wall-to-wall coverage reads as bad carpet, which is why the visible margin matters.
The thing to watch
Pattern hides traffic. A plain runner in a hallway will show a walked path within a year; a patterned one will not.

Why washable matters here
Long runners for halls and landings. Every rug we make washes at 30°C in a domestic machine, grips a hard floor without an underlay, and contains no latex, glue or rubber crumb. In a hallway that is the difference between a rug you protect and a rug you use.
