Why a non-slip backing does not help here

A non-slip backing works by gripping a smooth hard surface. On carpet there is no smooth surface to grip — the carpet pile itself moves under the rug, so the rug creeps rather than slides. Friction cannot fix that.

What does work

A carpet-to-rug gripper. These have a toothed or hooked underside that engages the carpet pile and a grippy top that holds the rug. They are the only thing that reliably stops creep.

Choosing the rug

• Go low pile over carpet. Pile on pile looks and feels unresolved.
• Contrast matters — a rug close in colour to the carpet reads as a stain rather than a layer.
• Keep it clearly smaller than the room so it reads as deliberate.

A practical warning

A rug left in one place on carpet for years leaves a permanent mark, from both compression and differential fading. Move it occasionally.
